Autistic Spectrum

Your Safe Drug-Free Treatment For Autism

So what is Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Before we go deep into what ASD is all about, let’s start with some facts…

  1. autismHallmark feature is impaired social interaction.
  1. Early signs may be babies who are unresponsive and do not make eye contact
  1. Younger children with ASD may engage in repetitive movement like rocking or twirling and may be delayed with speech.
  1. Males are 4 times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with ASD
  1. There is a strong genetic component to ASD and research is currently focused on determining the genes responsible.

A quick and simple explanation of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is this… ASD is a condition developmental condition. ASD affects individuals in two main areas:

  • Impaired communication and social interaction
  • Limited, repetitive patterns of behaviour, activates and interests

ASD sufferers often have difficulties with interacting with others and usually find the world to be a very confusing and sometimes frustrating place. Their challenges in communicating with others can result in ‘melt downs’. It’s important to know that a ‘melt-down’ is very different to tantrums. He difference between a tantrum is the individual does not choose to have a melt down.

Another symptom of ASD is that they often have sensory sensitivities – meaning, they may experience being under- or over-sensitive to any of their five senses.

How do we get ASD and do we have it forever?

You don’t “get” ASD, you are born with it. Like being born left-handed.

Although there is a lot of research being done about the ASD, It is still not known what causes someone to be born with ASD. It is believed to be the result from changes to the brain development, although more research is needed to prove this. The cause of brain development changes can be caused by a combination of factors, including genetic and environmental factors.

The good news is that ASD is not caused by parenting or social circumstances… and it is also not caused by vaccination or any other medical treatment.

ASD is a lifetime condition that most medical professions believe is incurable.

However, thanks to proven breakthrough brain-treatment technology, there are options to reduce the symptoms and improve quality of life for sufferers.

Secondary problems with ASD can include:

  • Speech and language difficulties
  • Intellectual disability (around 70% of individuals with ASD also have an intellectual disability)
  • Sleep problems
  • Attention problems
  • Epilepsy
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Challenges with fine and gross motor skills

Another common symptom with ASD sufferers is their challenge to interpret sensory information. In other words, being over-sensitive to sound, touch, taste, smell and vision. This can be very distressing for ASD individuals and can result in extremely strong reactions.

How do we know for certain that our child, partner or friend has ASD?

The typical way most people who receive treatment for ASD is they go to their doctors and tell them their symptoms. The doctor then gives them a diagnosis of ASD and they end up taking stimulant medication, such as Ritalin or Adderall.

These diagnoses are based on symptom clusters without any biological information. This is a major problem because it is treating the symptoms and not the root cause of the issue.

There is a better way.

At the Mind Matters Clinic we believe it is critical to actually look at and study the brain. We want to look at how your brain works because in reality how does anybody know what is going on inside the brain unless you actually look?

We have multiple, easy, painless procedures that we can perform to do what many of our clients refer to as a ‘Brain Scan’.  Really this is brain mapping, as we study the information processing flow in the brain. In addition to the scans, we also test how your brain works through sophisticated computerized testing

The result is a visual report, which enables us to determine any specific regions of the brain which are not functioning at their best.

What can we do to help our child, our partner or our friend with ASD?

Throughout history Medication has been the most common treatment for ASD, but it is not necessarily ideal as it is treating the symptoms not the cause.

There are different types of medication frequently prescribed for this disorder. None of them cure the disorder… but people report being helped by them if they find the correct medication for them and the correct dose.

However, when they are off the medication they still have ASD.

There are different attitudes to medication and to medicate young brains with strong drugs is often a concern for parents. Sometimes medication is necessary, but not in many cases.

“You Are NOT Stuck With The Brain You Have”

The Smarter Drug-Free Approach

After 21 years and tens of thousands of scans, the single most important lesson we have learned is that we can literally change people’s brains and their lives.

There is a concept called Neuroplasticity. What it means simply is that you can work the brain similar to a muscle and make it healthier and function better.

The good news is… You are not stuck with the brain you have.

You can make it better and we can prove it as we’ve done it so many times before.

Recently we were working with an 8-year-old boy suffering behaviour and anger issues. After a short and safe treatment, his 5-year-old brother said to his Dad “I like this brain doctor as he makes my brother happy again”.

This is just a small example of the impact that the work we do has on not just the patient but for the whole family.

So How Does This Treatment Work?

Thanks to advanced brain-imagery technology we are able to look at the brain in ways that have never been possible before. Here’s how…

We analyse our patient’s brainwaves and uncover the source of problem areas in the brain. What this tells us is, the best and safest way to treat this problem at the source.

The science behind this non-intrusive treatment is called, Neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is a proven method that has worked for thousands of patients from all over the world where it ignites the natural ability of the brain to heal itself.

The way it works is… We use multiple, easy, painless procedures to scan the brain and map how it processes information. We call this Brain-Mapping. We also test how the brain works through sophisticated computerized testing.

The result is a visual report enabling us to determine any specific regions of the brain which are not functioning at their best.  The good news is it doesn’t stop there.

After 21 years and hundreds of scans, the single most important lesson we have learned is that you can change your brain functioning and change your life.

Thanks to this technology, you can now rework your brain like training in a gym, to make it healthier and more productive.

You can make it more efficient as have thousands of others who have successfully utilised this process. Even people in the early stages of dementia have been able to improve their functioning.

More About the Science of the Mind Matters Treatment

The Mind Matters Clinic method is the least toxic, most effective treatment for brain and mind conditions that exists in Australia today.

There are a number of different treatment options that have been validated scientifically and that have been endorsed in peer-reviewed journals.

One of these is a process called Neurofeedback or EEG Biofeedback. It is a natural treatment that has been around for decades but with intelligent computer technology it now gives precision feedback that can be utilised to correct or help the condition. Let me explain more:

The American Academy of Paediatrics in 2013 gave level 1 status to Neurofeedback as a “best support intervention of ASD on par with medication”.

Professor Frank Duffy MD, Director of Clinical Neurophysiology at the Children’s Hospital, Boston, USA and Professor of Neurology, Harvard, stated that EEG Biofeedback should play a major therapeutic role in many areas. If any medication had demonstrated such a wide spectrum of efficacy it would be universally accepted and widely used.” (Clinical EEG Vol 31, No.1, Jan 2000).

There are over 2,000 scientific papers about Neurofeedback and ASD that have been published in peer-reviewed journals. The literature appears to be expanding exponentially on this topic.

Here’s a brief explanation of how Neurofeedback works…

You can go to the gym and work out the muscles on any part of your body, but there’s never really been a way to work out your brain until now, and the best part is the workouts seem like fun entertaining games you enjoy.

The first step is for our patient to wear a comfortable and no-intrusive cap that analysis their brain activity over a series of fun, entertaining, enjoyable and interactive games. This will give us a comprehensive and personalised assessment of the patient’s brain function profile, localising the problem areas of their brain.

. Once we have these results, we can then start a personalised brain-training regime to specifically improve their functioning. How we do that is by safely attaching light electrodes on the scalp over the problem areas which measure the brainwave or electrical activity of the brain. This safe procedure allows the person’s brain activity to be visible on our computer screen. By producing different brainwaves we get different responses to an activity on the screen, which we can then utilise.

On our screen we can see their electrical activity from the problem area of the brain. On the patient’s screen they are given simple ‘computer game’ type tasks with rewards when they are producing the desired brainwaves we are trying to encourage.

Over time, the brain self corrects and learns to produce the desired brainwave patterns and to maintain them. This is through the process called Neuroplasticity. Norman Doidge talks about this extraordinary ability of the brain to improve itself in his book “The Brain That Changes Itself”. It is a fascinating read. Also the ABC series “Redesign My Brain” is highly worthwhile watching before you engage in this safe and easy treatment.

How does the process work with getting an Assessment and then Brain Training at the Solstice Clinic?

Here’s the quick easy to understand overview, with the more detailed information below.

Step 1:  You enquire on this site or call us and talk to one of our qualified Mental Health Professionals about your family member or friend that needs an assessment and some assistance.

Step 2:  If we feel that we are a match for each other and the problem is something that we may be able to help with then we will provide you a quotation and then book you in for what our clients commonly called the ‘brain scan’ assessment at our clinic.

Step 3:  We analyse all the data collected about your brain.  Your results are reviewed by our medical professionals and a detailed report will be produced and presented to you.  You will be able to see visually any areas of the brain that are not functioning at their optimum. We will then organise a phone consultation to talk through the findings of the report for you.

Step 4:  At the consult we will describe any options that you have available for what our clients often call ‘Brain Training’ to work the underperforming sections of the brain similar to how you would work a muscle to train it up.   If this is of interest to you then we can provide you a quotation for further treatment.

Step 5: Ongoing computer ‘Brain Training’ work for as little as 1 to 2 weeks or it can be longer depending on the complexity of the case and the results that the patient is getting. The goal of this phase is to do everything within our power to get the brain working naturally at the very best it is capable of.

Here’s the more detailed scientific version of what has been described above about the assessment we do here at Solstice?

We firmly believe that a thorough assessment is essential before training commences. Features of ASD can manifest from other reasons such as trauma or head injury and often a misdiagnosis is made. It is important that we know what we are treating.

Our assessment has four levels and information from each assessment is merged to determine optimum treatment recommendations. These include:

  1. A Neuropsychological assessment completed on a touch screen kiosk, that is measuring cognitive skills such as auditory memory, working memory, visual recall, switching of attention, ability to sustain attention, executive functioning (such as planning and recalling a pattern in a maze), and many more important tasks necessary for normal everyday functioning.
  1. A social and emotional assessment gives us a profile of how the individual is coping in life. Measures of empathy and intuition, social skills, emotional resilience, self esteem, depression, anxiety and stress states all combine to give us a comprehensive view of the individual.
  1. The third assessment involves measuring the electrical activity of the brain in a resting state, first with eyes open and then with eyes closed. This is the EEG. This information is digitalised and compared to an international normative database and is then called a QEEG, or Quantitative Electroencephalograph and we can see deviations from the norm here.
  1. What is our ‘piece de resistance’ and something that is rarely assessed in Australia and other countries is that we then measure what are called Event Related Potentials. This involves measuring the brain as it completes simple standard tasks so we can see the different networks that link together in the brain when it is processing information. This is one of the most accurate measures of the brain and is measured in 1,000ths of a second and then compared to a database. Professor Leon Petchkovsky, a well known Psychiatrist and Jungian analyst tells us he gets more information from this assessment than he does from an MRI.

This information is analysed by the Human Brain Institute in Switzerland, Norway and Saint Petersburg. The report we receive shows us 3D images of the brain with the problem areas depicted. These problems areas invariably relate to issues highlighted in 1 and 2 above. From this information and from other information from families and/or the individual we together determine a treatment program and goals.

What changes can we expect to see?

Our observation is that when children and adults complete Neurofeedback there is a dramatic improvement in their quality of life, behaviour, concentration, learning capacity, relationships, and self-esteem.

Our patience commonly recieve positive feedback from their teachers, bosses and partners who are amazed with the difference. Our patience also report feeling more confident, able to hear people better, ability to focus on completing tasks and generally feeling more settled, responsible and mature. And because the positive feedback is ongoing the changes are generally lasting and transfer to most aspects of their lives.
